BIO

FRANCK BIYONG
AFRICA’S 21ST CENTURY ROCK GUITAR HERO
Growing up in Gabon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast before settling in the UK at age 14, Franck Biyong lived in households filled with good music. Little wonder why the towering Cameroonian artist is a composer, guitar player, singer, band leader and producer. This master of musical interpretation recalls American Jazz guitarist, Wes Montgomery’s “Canadian Sunset” as the song that set him down his musical path as a pre-teen.

Fanck Biyong went on to cultivate a personal and passionate relationship with music, recognizing it as “spiritual food for the soul”. Receiving musical instruction and training at the National Institute of Arts in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), he scorched a brilliant path with his electric guitar and became a reporter of human emotions and feelings. Franck translated these experiences into several Afro Beat and Afro Jazz albums that made people move, laugh, dance, cry and meditate.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

Fanck Biyong has played at countless spots around the globe including SOB’s in New York and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Franck has also enjoyed European tours with music legends such as Nigerian Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen and Ghanaian Highlife guitarist Ebo Taylor. Franck has also worked with Wyclef Jean as well as Salif Keita, King Sunny Ade, Culture Musical Club, Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Olamide, Waje, Phyno, Efya, Diamond Platnumz and Vanessa Mdee during his time as Music Director on Coke Studio Africa Season 1 & 2.

But Franck Biyong, a consummate performer and creator, has reinvented himself.

In 2016, he shared his vision for Alternative Afro-Electro-Rock and Crossover Music with the recording of the LIYOMBA CHURCH single. This exciting single mined the link between rock and electro with dazzlingly good results. Clever use of Swahili lyrics made it immediately familiar with fans in East Africa and the rest of the continent for whom this Bantu language resonates with many of their own.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

This is in line with the Pan-African ideals underpinning Franck’s new sound. And, one of two logical evolutions of African Music; the other being creating musical forms that would appeal to diverse audiences regardless of their age and knowledge about new types of African music: “We have to adapt to change, not to dissolve totally our identity and unique approach to music, but to bridge the gap between where we were and where we should go”.

And, Franck is leading the pack…

Having been a musician for decades and with diverse influences and references (from Francis Bebey to Frank Zappa), Fanck Biyong serves as a
“filter” through which two different streams are passing. The first stream is represented by music of the past generation that he hopes to pass on to the next; stretched out, revamped and modernized. While the second is the modern urban sounds that he plans to incorporate, develop and confront working with musical forms that do not belong together in the first place.

Another aspect of Franck’s futuristic idea of African Music is defined by artistic independence and total freedom of expression. This is a marked departure from the current strong push towards commercialization of image in place of music.

Perhaps his new rock oriented project will herald crossover exposure and breakthrough on the international scene…and it may also finally alter the perception of African Music and its musicians at large.

Pedro Makay was born in Bilbao. In childhood he received his first musical experience in piano lessons and at 13 he started playing Spanish guitar. In a trip to Jamaica with his family, while visiting a friend in Negril he’s introduced to Caribbean rhythms, reggae and calypso which would become inspirational to his music.

In Bilbao a reputed gypsy guitarist, Jose Cortes, introduces him to flamenco and teaches him the repetition and discipline necessary to improve and perfect his technique on flamenco guitar. Then he started composing.

In 2007 he recorded his first album by the name of Pedro Makay with Carlos Velasco, Teddy Baxter and Daniel Amat. That same year he traveled to Buenos Aires where he lived the following 4 years. He studies harmony/composition with Rino Rafanelli, singing with Silvia Gaddi and acting with Lito Cruz. In BA he presents his album playing gigs in night clubs, cabarets, theaters and cultural centers in the Buenos Aires scene, promoting his music in radio stations and television.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

In 2010 he records in Argentina his second album, Ojos Negros, with the producer Andres Mayo and musicians Gustavo “El Polaco” Goyeneche, Gabriel Costa, Daniel Leis, Ervin Stutz, Alejo Von der Pahlen and Juanjo “El Chaqueño” Martinez. The record was listed in the Latin Grammy Awards, under the categories of “Album of the year” and “Best New Artist”.

In 2012 he returns to Spain, where he continued his musical career in Madrid, offering concerts in mythical halls such as Sala Barco, El Juglar, Café la Palma, the Berlin Café and Sala Clamores with the participation of Mali, griot Fousseni Fakoly, Abba Suso, griot from Gambia and Cuban singer Lazaro Armenteros, grandson of Benny Moré, as well as appearing in European venues, Beograde, Seville, Bologna, Milan, Venice, Rome and many more.

In Lavapies, an intensely active cultural and multi ethnical neighbourhood of Madrid, where he lives (a European Greenwich Village where all cultures of the world converge) is an important source of inspirational influence in his music.

Since 2016 he has participated in prestigious Italian Music Festivals: The Riccia Folk Festival, The Fiesta Global of Montefabbri Festival and the Bertinoro Festival, amongst others. In 2020 he played at Alkantara Fest – international Folk & World Music Festival, in Sicily, and in 2021 he signed with the Italian label Caligola Records and releases his new album “Colores”, presenting it in various events and Festivals such as the Ravenna Festival of Cultures and the Songwriting Festival in Venice.

“Colores” is an eight song album of own compositions inspired by popular roots and born through musical encounters, experiences and intense collaborations with musicians of diverse cultures. Recorded live in collaboration with, amongst others, Norman Hogue, Miron Rafajlovic, Abba Suso, Roberto Lorenzo, Aboubakar Syla, Pancho Brañas, “Colores” could best be described as offering a “World Music”style.

REVIEWS

“Colores, an accomplished album full of vibrant rhythms, great for dancing, which we could include in the WORLD MUSIC genre and is crossing beyond our frontiers with Pedro and his band participating in different Music Festivals and International Events”.

Tato Puerto, En Un Mundo Feliz.

“A cheerful and fresh job; different from most of the records in circulation today … Spain, Africa, Caribbean, North America, all the “Colores” of world music in a work that to ascribe to the “world music” genre would perhaps be an understatement: listen to it, there are eight hypnotic songs and engaging, which will not leave you indifferent!“.

Jazz It.

“Original and brilliant mix of: afro-cuban, jazz, funk, blues and rock…with taste and talent, injection of sunny joy“.

Eugenio Mirti, Jazzespresso.

“Colourful album, vital, fresh and greatly optimistic”.

Sonia Frias, Entrelares. Círculo de Bellas Artes

“Bright and fresh music is greatly danceable and in favor of the public”.

Lola Martinez, Artesfera. Radio 3.

“A high level show with great compositions”.

TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI – a female groove band formed in 2018 in Tokyo by three Japanese session musicians.

Their producer got opportunity to live in NY for eight years in 1980s and 2010s, and he went to around 500 music live concerts. Especially in late 80s, he experienced creative music beyond genres, and he fell in love with groove music. As Duke Ellington said, “There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind”, he strives to produce TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI as a powerful groove band with music beyond the generations, genders, and genres.

They mainly perform at various music festivals and solo live concerts. Most of the times, they are sold out.

Since the band is formed, they have been collaborating with other musicians also. They made two music videos and the second video “WHAT IS HIP?” became huge hit particularly outside of Japan. On Juna’s YouTube channel, the video got one hundred thousand views within a month, and now hits 10000 subscribers! This shows that TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI has been garnering attention.

Swiss based trio hitting your brains, hearts and limbs. The Next Movement: Character, authenticity and urgency – but above all: Groove.

Explosive Groove-pop with enough funky soul might be the most accurate description of their fairly unswiss sound creation. Comparisons to Anderson. Paak and references to Prince show up on a regular. Call it what you want; their music is very meaningful and grooves hard.

Swiss-based Groove Trio “The Next Movement” announce what they call “The Glorios Return of The Funk” in 2020 – dilldoard, Funk Update

A first listen might suggest: this is a new production emerging from the legendary funk scene of Minneapolis. Wrong by far! Three Swiss musicians are boosting Funk to new heights on the new album THE NEXT MOVEMENT (LEOPARD Records). J.J. Flueck, Pascal «P» Kaeser and Sam
Siegenthaler form the explosive helvetic Trio, with their music unmistakably fusing the influences of R&B, funk and blues from James Brown, Prince, Jimi Hendrix to Miles Davis on this album. And they do it in skillful and sonic perfection.
All three musicians have known each other for decades and have played together in various scenarios, often as sidemen. Up to the day where they decided to bring their own song material to life with THE NEXT MOVE-MENT. Founding the band was the logical next step in
their music careers. And since all three are fans of funk, R&B, blues and jazz, the direction they would take musically, was very clear.
THE NEXT MOVEMENT is a highly danceable, endlessly grooving album that captivates you from the first listen and makes you want to move your body.

J.J. Flueck

Born in Olten and raised in Solothurn and the USA, drummer, singer and bandleader J.J. Flueck has been one of the most active players and pus-hers in the Swiss music scene for years. After completing his jazz studies at the Musikhochschule Basel and various further training courses in the USA, he has left his unique groove mark on countless projects and bands on the drumset and as musical director. Besides his own bands «The Next Movement», «JJ’s Hausband» or as musical director for the top-class «James Brown Tribute Show», he played and produced for many years with the exceptional rapper Greis or with Nicole Bernegger as well as for the intercontinental project «Rogue State Alliance» (Pro Helvetia South Africa and Switzerland) and many more.
J.J. Flueck was awarded the Förderpreis der Regiobank Solothurn (2005) and the Prize for Music of the Canton of Solothurn (2014).

Pascal «P» Kaeser

Pascal «P» Kaeser Pascal Kaeser, or often called «P» {π} for short among musicians, knows no compromises when it comes to groove. Already during his electric bass studies at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA), he con-centrated on Afro-American music styles: soul, funk, R&B and jazz shaped his 4 years in America, where he studied with Anthony Vitti, David Buda, Whit
Brown and Fernando Huergo. In New England and New York he soon shares the stage with Antonio Sanchez (Pat Metheny), Tony Escapa (Ricky Martin) and Keith Harris (Black Eyed Peas).
After the occasional struggles to pronounce his name correctly, his fellow musicians soon decide to call him “PK” and eventually just “P” for short. After graduation in 2000, “P” returns and shortly thereafter establishes himself in the Swiss music scene. The next few years are marked by intensive concert activity and a very wide range of different projects. This leads to collaborations with the rapper Greis, the soul singer Nicole Bernegger, the jazz pianist Claude Diallo and the composition commission for the Circus Monti programme in 2013. Together with the production company cucoclip, Pascal works on va-rious short films and nationally and internationally broadcast commercials. As part of the musician pool Take This, “P” is on stage with Adrian Stern, Polo Hofer, William White, Lo & Leduc, Nemo, Marc Sway, Brandy Butler, Max Mutzke, Steffe la Cheffe and other artists.

Sam Siegenthaler

Samuel Siegenthaler, (*1980) professional musician, born and raised in Burgdorf (BE), is a guitarist with heart and soul.
His first influences were his parents’ varied record collection and his father’s guitar playing.
The initial spark came at the age of 12 with the first much longed-for instrument of his own.
Five years of training in classical guitar lead to the world of electric guitars. From then on, selfstudy and lessons with Marco Figini and Zlatko «Slädu» Perica, training at the Lucerne Jazz School.
Since 2003 intensive concert activity, mainly with the groove conglomerate J.J. Flueck and Pascal «P» Kaeser. Performances at home and abroad with renowned artists from the most diverse areas of pop, blues, rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop and soul. He is a permanent member
of J.J.’s house band, The James Brown Tribute Show, Soulvision Allstars, Soul Train, Prince Tribute.
He is also a sought-after sideman for Eliana Burki, William White, Greis, Steff la Cheffe, Msoké, Tommy Vercetti, Manillio, Nicole Bernegger, Mario Capitanio, Luca Hänni.
Concerts throughout Europe, USA, Canada, South America, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East.
2005 Awarded the Culture Promotion Prize of the Burgdorf Burgergemeinde.

PHAT STRUT

The union between the groovy and very high quality music of PHAT STRUT together with the beautiful and powerful black voice of the funky “big mama” Tiza Brown, gives life to one of the absolutely best funky jazz bands in the panorama of emerging musical projects.
Drummer Thierry Choinard met with bass player Laurent Schaffter in Los Angeles, in 1995, which led them to play as a combo in different Soul Funk and R&B projects.
Bertrand Gallaz joined the combo in 1998 in Switzerland to found their first project, Fool Groove, focused on playing The Meters’ repertoire, in local festivals and venues. Bertrand was already an established and recognized guitar player of the local scene – and to some extend international scene – especially in Jazz and Funk. He had already several albums out featuring well-known artists such as Jean-Paul Bourelly or Ronald Shannon Jackson (Decoding Society, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler).

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

In 2008, the three musicians decided to create their own music. PHAT STRUT was founded. Meanwhile organist / keyboardist Giuseppe Germano joined the band and a first repertoire of pure instrumental Funk was born.
The band recorded its first album in 2011 and started to play festivals and venues around the French part of Switzerland. The guys knew they wanted to add some great soulful and funky lead vocals at some points.
Since 2008, PHAT STRUT has been collaborating with several gifted soulful artists such as LZ LOVE from the USA or from Switzerland, lead vocalists who always had soulful captivating voices and strong energy. LZ LOVE participated in the writing of several lyrics, toured with the band in the United States and is featured on two albums.

Tiza Brown joined PHAT STRUT early 2020 as lead singer. Tiza is an American singer, reputed for having frequented some of the best musical scenes in Switzerland and the neighboring countries during her years in Europe. From Jazz to Gospel, Soul and Funk, Tiza has a warm and powerful voice. She has performed with Phil Collins, Phil Perry or saxophonist Gerald Albright and assured opening act for artists such as James Brown, Maceo Parker, Candy Dulfer, Erykah Badu.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

PHAT STRUT has released 4 albums, including one recorded live in Austin, TX. Several singles and the latest album « Funky Confessions » are available on all main digital platforms for download or streaming. All studio recordings were recorded live, meaning all instruments were recorded together at the same time with no over-dubs or re-recording what so ever. Each track is a lively authentic capture of the band moment, in the same way The Meters recorded their music. All organic and live.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

PHAT STRUT received appreciation and personal direct support from Leo Nocentelli (The Meters), Pee Wee Ellis (James Brown, JB’s) and Shane Theriot.

We look forward to playing our music for more and more people and provide a great time to everyone.

Michael Merkt – Bass
Francisco Riccheri – Drums
Gonzalo Marinucci – Guitar and Vocals

As a self-produced musical project whose roots lie in the surfrock and garage, the band Acuario Cosmico was formed seven years agoby the singer, guitarist and composer Gonzalo Marinucci.

He started in Buenos Aires in 2009 with his first EP “Atencion en el cielo”.
2011 the Band had it’s first tour in Europe, and found 2012 in Berlin it’s new home where presented “Delfos” his Psyquedellic Surf rock Album.

Inspired by Names like, Dick Dale, Oscar Aleman, The Shadows and The Surfaris, the music reminds you of movies from Quentin Tarantino
or Robert Rodriguez.

The lyrics are based on William S. Burroughs, in his work “Nova Express” and spiritual counselors against the everyday madness. Thus, the band plays their songs in 432 Hz, whose vibrations are said to have a healing effect, knowledge known before the Inquisition, today only practiced by a few.

The band presents his latest work with “10 neuen Planeten” which was released in May 2018.

CAMERA SOUL is a powerful jazz-funk ensemble, produced by Mr. Marco Rossi of Azzurra Music (Verona) and released and marketed in the Americas by Kathryn Ballard Shut of TIMKAT Entertainment (Denver, Colorado). Inspired by legendary horn line, soul, R&B, and jazz-fusion artists such as Earth, Wind and Fire, The Commodores, Tower of Power, and Stevie Wonder, as well as neo-soul grooves by Incognito, Erykah Badu, and Jamiroquai, the group is based out of southern Italy (Bari), and led by veteran composer-arranger brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

Camera Soul’s distinctive sound is further defined by the sweet and soulful voice of lead vocalist Maria Enrica Lotesoriere (Dress Code – 2015 and Connections – 2017) and formerly by Serena Brancale on the group’s first two albums (Words Don’t Speak – 2011 and Not For Ordinary People – 2013). The group features a world-class lineup of studio and live performance musicians, including Pippo Lombardo (piano), Beppe Sequestro (bass), Antonio Tosques (lead guitar, 2015-present), Francesco Palmitessa (lead guitar, 2011-2013), Gianluca Cardellichio (rhythm guitar, 2011-2014), Liviana Ferri (percussion), Fabio Delle Foglie (drums, 2014-present), Mimmo Campanale (drums, 2011-2013), Daniele Scannapieco and Bruno Tassone (tenor sax), Gianfranco Campagnoli and Alberto Di Leone (trumpet), and Piero Dotti and Elio Arcieri (background vocals). Camera Soul has released four studio albums – Words Don’t Speak (2011), Not For Ordinary People (2013), Dress Code (2015), and now, Connections (2017). Each album delivers powerful jazz-funk, neo-soul, progressive Jazz, and a mixture of genres that have earned the group international critical acclaim, as well as worldwide distribution in Europe, America, and Japan. 2016 proved to be another explosive year of growth for Italian jazz-funk supergroup CAMERA SOUL, which kicked off with the band’s debut at the internationally famous Umbria Winter Jazz Fest #23 in Orvieto, Italy, in the province that shares its name — and in the same mountainous province which this past summer would experience mass devastation thanks to several major earthquakes.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

The festival, which showcased Camera Soul alongside jazz greats such as Kurt Elling and Big Band, as well as Portland-based neo-soul star Jarrod Lawson and The Good People, ended on January 3, 2016. Once complete, the group headed into the studio to begin recording its fourth studio album, “Connections” (Azzurra Music), set to release worldwide on both CD and digital versions on January 25, 2017. With each effort since 2011, the group’s leaders, composer-brothers Piero and Pippo Lombardo, strive to raise both the musical and story bar. With “Connections”, their longest and most robust album to date, Camera Soul offers 18 tracks that feature five instrumental interludes and thirteen full-length songs, all in deep tribute and memory of one of the composers’ unquestioningly pervasive influences: producer, musician, and co-founder of Earth, Wind and Fire, Mr. Maurice White, whom the world lost this past year. In addition to honoring Mr. White, the Lombardo brothers chose the album’s title and theme, “Connections”, to be a continuous story arc of human interaction that reaches into every track and delves into the various ways that we affect each other daily. For example, on dance anthem, “Help Yourself”, lead vocalist Maria Enrica Lotesoriere encourages her mate to ‘Help yourself to find your happiness’, as she refuses to be the sole source of it. “Black Cat”, a darkly funky trip, evokes a Stevie Wonder-esque mood of people bowing to old superstitions – “A black cat / Under the ladder … / A broken mirror / On Friday 13 …” And while there are certainly tales of various “love connections” about, “No Such Thing” specifically relates an unwanted, first-date connection who cannot seem to “take the hint” that there is no future relationship to be had. After a month of pleading, the driving chorus finally demands, “Hey! / Leave me ‘lone / Shuffle off! / Find a home!”

NOVO NEW VIDEOCLIP: “PALLUNI RUCCATI”

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

Novo, is a singer-songwriter from Messina, Sicily. Musically it can be placed in the pop / folk scene.
The themes of his texts go from the social to the sentimental, often with an ironic vein, at times controversial.
He took his first steps as a singer in small formations at the age of 19 with classic cover and hard rock but without being able to perform live.
Only at the age of 22, with the Limited Edition group of which he is singer and guitarist in second, with a pop rock repertoire, will perform on several occasions in local and public and private events.
With this training he recorded his first demo entitled “Musa”.
After the experience with the Limited Edition, Novo continues to cultivate his passion for music and in this case in writing and composing music while remaining inactive.
At the age of 25, in 2013, with friends, Danilo Donato (guitarist), Mirco Sapienza (drums), Giuliano Cento (bass) founded Pro Bono, a band whose goal is the production of new songs. Also in this case, besides that of singer, Novo covers the role of second guitarist and author of the band’s songs.
With this training he presents himself at the “Tour Music Fest” with the unreleased track “Dottor Feelgood”, stopping at the second stage of the event.
Later on, with Pro Bono he will record two demos, “Delocalizzescion” and “Lento Lamento”. These will present their works performing at the Rockerilla (Torregrotta, ME).
After the Pro Bono experience in the summer of 2014, thanks to the drummer and friend Mirco Sapienza he came into contact with JWolf productions and met the keyboardist and arranger Dario Lisitano. Here, with the latter, he starts working on his first solo work, or an EP entitled “To not impress us anymore”.
On June 19, 2016, on youtube, he published his first single “Generation 1000 euros?” Awaiting the definitive launch of his ep.

On June 22nd 2016 he is a guest at Radio Zenith Messina for the presentation of his single (“Generazione mille euro?)
In December 2016 he performed at the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele of Messina for the event “The gallery that I would like”.
In May 2017 he publishes the video of his new single “Sulle Spiagge di Lei”.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

Later Novo takes part in various events held in Messina performing at the “Music Festival 2017” and performing itinerant performances for the initiative sponsored by the municipality of Messina #BusForMe.
In July 2017 he released his first self-produced ep, “Per non impressionarci più”, containing six unreleased tracks, accompanied by a video clip of the song “Prima della regina”. Everything is presented on the city radio “RadioStreet”.
In August he follows on with performances in various local places of Messina and takes part in the “Messina OlymParty” (MOP 2017), an artistic-sporting event that will host the selections of Sanremo Giovani. On the final night of the 2017 MOP, Novo will open the Zero Assoluto concert with the songs “Generazione mille euro?” and “Prima della regina”.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

For his videos and performances, Novo will get the attention of online newspapers, TV and local newspapers such as TempoStretto, Tcf and La Gazzetta del Sud.

In July 2019 he is selected (among submissions from all over Sicily) by the artistic director Mario Incudine, famous sicilian art director and songwriter, for the Antillo Folk Fest contest. The final phase is held on July 13th, an evening presented by Salvo La Rosa, the most famous tv presenter in Sicily.

https://0 Franck Biyong | Afrobeat, Electronic, Jazz, Rock

Novo competes with two pieces composed by him, “Sulle Spiagge di Lei” and “Malatia” winning the first prize awarded by the jury chaired by Pippo Rinaldi, aka Kaballà (songwriter and author for artists of the caliber of Carmen Consoli, Mario Venuti, Eros Ramazzotti, Antonella Ruggero, Nina Zilli and many others). He was awarded a musical production and, on July 14, opened the concert “Grande Sud” by Eugenio Bennato, Mario Incudine and Peppe Servillo (Avion Travel).
The video clip of the thrilling song in Sicilian dialect “Palluni Ruccati”, published on 24.06.2021, reached 10,000 views and 500 likes in 4 days.

Following a list of other events in which Novo took part;
LoveMeFest – July 2018.
MOP – August 2018.
Night of Art – Palazzo dei Leoni, Messina, September 2018.
Blood Moon – July 2018, exhibition on C&T.

Akinola Sennon started attending the Joseph School of the Arts in 1991, from age seven, learning to play the cuatro and studying the theory of music. He then moved on to playing two other instruments, the guitar and the piano at the said music school in Siparia, under the tutelage of Mr. Ashford Joseph. By age ten, Akinola was arranging musical compositions for his sibling to perform at his school concerts and recitals, since they all attended the same school.
Akinola Sennon started playing the steelpan in Standard Three with Mr Roland ‘Moose’ Joseph and at that point, he fell deeply in love with the instrument. During this time, he also played the guitar with the school and church choir. Miss Valdez, the school choir Mistress, was quite a huge influence in developing his musical ability. Mr Joseph nurtured his talent during that early period by taking him to many competitions and exposing us to the steelpan fraternity. Akinola Sennon remembers Mr Roland ‘Moose’ Joseph taking him to Pantrinbago’s Annual General Meetings and introducing him to various persons.
Akinola Sennon joined Siparia Deltones in 1996 for the Panorama season and also the Stage Side. It was there that he met Mr Carlton ‘Zanda’ Alexander. Akinola vividly remembers him asking him one day, “Young man, do you know your scales?” to which Akinola Sennon said “Yes.” He then instructed him, “Play me this scale,” which Akinola did. He then replied, “Ok, well do you know your chord scales?” Akinola again answered, “Yes.”He instructed, “Well play me this chord scale.” Akinola played the scale and he then requested him to play him the same chord scale from the 2nd inversion and that was where the trouble started. That was the beginning of a 17 year old relationship. Akinola has been his understudy since then.
Akinola Sennon was inducted as a member of the Coal Pot band which was led by Mr. Zanda. This band was basically a Kaiso/Jazz fusion ensemble with horns, vocals, piano, bass guitar and steelpan. He performed extensively at all the leading jazz and fusion shows throughout the nation, including Tobago Jazz Festival, San Fernando Jazz Festival, Sanch Apri Carnival, Siparia Jazz Festival, Point Jazz Festivaland many more. At age 18, he also began playing with Clive Alexander, Carlton’s older brother. This was also quite an experience and has significantly contributed to his overall development, especially his weekly performances at the Satchmo’s Jazz club on Ariapita Avenue for a number of months.
In 2003, Akinola Sennon became the captain of Siparia Deltones’ junior band and later went on to become the captain of the senior band. He has worked with the National Steel Symphony Orchestra for one year and the Pan in the Classroom Unit. Akinola Sennon has taught at Forest Reserve Anglican School, Fyzabad Presbyterian School, Iere High school, Palo Seco Government School and Trinidad Renaissance Preparatory School.
In 2009, Akinola played the role of the musical director for steel pan promotion in Canada, where, Siparia Deltones and I, did workshops throughout the country.
As an Arranger, he has composed for the Southern Marines Steel band Foundation placing 3rdin the Small Band Category of the Panorama competition of 2010. He won the Primary School category of the Sanfest Competition for four years in a row from 2010; three times with Forest Reserve Anglican School and one year with Trinidad Renaissance Preparatory School of which he is their musical director. Akinola Sennon also won the Pan for Blue Competition with Forest Reserve Anglican School in 2013.
He is presently the executive director and musical director of Siparia Deltones, where his intention is to have this instrument evolved globally. The designer of the band’s syllabus and course structure is what he is. Together with his band, Siparia Deltones, in 2013, they recorded an album with Hugh Masekela for which Akinola Sennon played the role of Project Coordinator and steelpan soloist.
Earlier this year, he travelled to the Netherlands to participate in the Amsterdams Conservatorium Van Summer Jazz Workshop where he is the first pan player to be accepted to be part of the prestige workshop. After that experience in the Netherlands, Akinola Sennon made a decision that the world should hear his voice more loudly via his pan. For whilst there he usually was approached and asked about his upcoming tours and albums due to students being overwhelmed by his playing ability. Akinola made the decision to do his first album, a project of the Deltones Institute of Steel Drums and music in collaboration with Berklee College, New England conservatory and Manhattan School of music students. Then he journeyed to the States where he auditioned students for the project.
This project was called Cousoumeh which received a record label contract from leading label Ropeadope Records. He also developed the concept of the album into a festival called the Cousoumeh festival. Both the album and the festival have been very successful thus far.
Akinola Sennon continues to work in the area of steelpan development, arranging and music education.
