Pedro Makay was born in Bilbao. In childhood he received his first musical experience in piano lessons and at 13 he started playing Spanish guitar. In a trip to Jamaica with his family, while visiting a friend in Negril he’s introduced to Caribbean rhythms, reggae and calypso which would become inspirational to his music.

In Bilbao a reputed gypsy guitarist, Jose Cortes, introduces him to flamenco and teaches him the repetition and discipline necessary to improve and perfect his technique on flamenco guitar. Then he started composing.

In 2007 he recorded his first album by the name of Pedro Makay with Carlos Velasco, Teddy Baxter and Daniel Amat. That same year he traveled to Buenos Aires where he lived the following 4 years. He studies harmony/composition with Rino Rafanelli, singing with Silvia Gaddi and acting with Lito Cruz. In BA he presents his album playing gigs in night clubs, cabarets, theaters and cultural centers in the Buenos Aires scene, promoting his music in radio stations and television.

In 2010 he records in Argentina his second album, Ojos Negros, with the producer Andres Mayo and musicians Gustavo “El Polaco” Goyeneche, Gabriel Costa, Daniel Leis, Ervin Stutz, Alejo Von der Pahlen and Juanjo “El Chaqueño” Martinez. The record was listed in the Latin Grammy Awards, under the categories of “Album of the year” and “Best New Artist”.

In 2012 he returns to Spain, where he continued his musical career in Madrid, offering concerts in mythical halls such as Sala Barco, El Juglar, Café la Palma, the Berlin Café and Sala Clamores with the participation of Mali, griot Fousseni Fakoly, Abba Suso, griot from Gambia and Cuban singer Lazaro Armenteros, grandson of Benny Moré, as well as appearing in European venues, Beograde, Seville, Bologna, Milan, Venice, Rome and many more.

In Lavapies, an intensely active cultural and multi ethnical neighbourhood of Madrid, where he lives (a European Greenwich Village where all cultures of the world converge) is an important source of inspirational influence in his music.

Since 2016 he has participated in prestigious Italian Music Festivals: The Riccia Folk Festival, The Fiesta Global of Montefabbri Festival and the Bertinoro Festival, amongst others. In 2020 he played at Alkantara Fest – international Folk & World Music Festival, in Sicily, and in 2021 he signed with the Italian label Caligola Records and releases his new album “Colores”, presenting it in various events and Festivals such as the Ravenna Festival of Cultures and the Songwriting Festival in Venice.

“Colores” is an eight song album of own compositions inspired by popular roots and born through musical encounters, experiences and intense collaborations with musicians of diverse cultures. Recorded live in collaboration with, amongst others, Norman Hogue, Miron Rafajlovic, Abba Suso, Roberto Lorenzo, Aboubakar Syla, Pancho Brañas, “Colores” could best be described as offering a “World Music”style.

REVIEWS

“Colores, an accomplished album full of vibrant rhythms, great for dancing, which we could include in the WORLD MUSIC genre and is crossing beyond our frontiers with Pedro and his band participating in different Music Festivals and International Events”.

Tato Puerto, En Un Mundo Feliz.

“A cheerful and fresh job; different from most of the records in circulation today … Spain, Africa, Caribbean, North America, all the “Colores” of world music in a work that to ascribe to the “world music” genre would perhaps be an understatement: listen to it, there are eight hypnotic songs and engaging, which will not leave you indifferent!“.

Jazz It.

“Original and brilliant mix of: afro-cuban, jazz, funk, blues and rock…with taste and talent, injection of sunny joy“.

Eugenio Mirti, Jazzespresso.

“Colourful album, vital, fresh and greatly optimistic”.

Sonia Frias, Entrelares. Círculo de Bellas Artes

“Bright and fresh music is greatly danceable and in favor of the public”.

DANY’s PROJECTS

PROPOSICION

A new artistic perspective of Dany Noel, in which Cuban music, flamenco and Latin jazz come together in an atmosphere of fusion. To realize the project he availed himself of the collaboration of great musicians and friends: the New York trumpeter and conga player Jerry González, the drummer Horacio “El negro” Hernández, the singer Concha Buika, the pianists Javier Masso Caramelo, Ivan “Melon” Lewis and Ivan Bridon, Dario Chiazzolino on guitar, Inoidel González on Sax and Carlos Sarduy on trumpet. In this project Dany Noel takes us on a journey full of good music and poetry, in which we feel different and innovative influences in a single fusion genre.

TINTA UNIDA

A fresh work, with a festive atmosphere, that vibrates in the tradition of Cuban rhythmic music that blends with flamenco and Latin jazz, to achieve a surprising result that lives in the memory of the spectators. Tinta unida represents colors, the skin colors of his musicians, the colors of music. It comes in various forms, all of equal importance without losing its essence. The composition, arrangements and melodic, harmonic and rhythmic treatment represent this essence, which Dany Noel imposes as composer, ar ranger, bassist, singer and producer.

CONFIDENCE

An album recorded in duo by Dany Noel and Italian guitarist Dario Chiazzolino. It is a purely jazz work. These two musicians come together to express their feelings and lifestyles through music, in an album that is recorded through the art of improvisation, creating rich melodies that caress the soul of all those who appreciate good music.

POR LA HABANA

“Por la Habana” represents an ode to his hometown for the 500th anniversary of its foundation and thanks to its music reflects the culture of the Cuban people. A record that represents an incitement to the “bailador” that flows from its roots to reach all Caribbean genres. His arrangements are full of Cuban rhythms, where in addition to singing and performing new themes, Dany Noel transforms the Italian song “Stare bene a metà” by Pino Daniele into a danceable theme, making the audience stand up for an evening full of Cuban flavor.

HACIENDO CAMINO *Latest Release*

Dany Noel presents a new project called “Haciendo Camino”. It is an album in which the director and arranger Dany Noel invites us to travel with music; he’s offering a concert for all tastes. It is a fresh and evocative repertoire ranging from bolero jazz to Latin jazz, bebop and other genres. It is a fusion proposal that will transmit a musical richness that can surely be appreciated by every kind of audience.

“I know Dany Noel, we’ve worked together, he’s an excellent bass player capable of playing any genre with absolute skill. He wrote this book as a guide to Cuban bass “Tumbaos” of all time. It’s a good job! Congratulations Dany!”
Chucho Valdés

“In this valuable pedagogical and chronological material Dany takes us on a journey of his own through different styles of Cuban music thanks to his instrument, the bass. Concepts that he himself learned and that were fundamental to his training, leading him to become one of the most important voices in contemporary Cuban bass guitar. Moreover, it is recommended not only to bass lovers, but to all kinds of scholars of our great Cuban music. Congratulations Dany!”

NOVO INTERVISTA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xO-ewWWW4Ck

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

Alessandro Capurro, aka Novo, a young singer-songwriter from Messina, a passion born as a child watching his uncle play the guitar, a long journey that has led him to sing and compose for some years. In his latest song “Palluni ruccati” , he tells his city with nostalgic love. A song in dialect that discovers the values and traditions that have disappeared in a poetic and evocative way. “Non aviumu nenti but ridiumu sempri” sings Alessandro, recalling his childhood, partly lived in the barracks of Camaro San Paolo, where, albeit in a difficult context, the values of the community were strong and real.

“We are losing sociality” – Alessandro says – “I believe that a city needs space, that’s where aggregation, art comes from. What Messina is experiencing is a unique opportunity, the clearing must serve the city to have new stimuli, to recover spaces and identity. “

The piece saw a prestigious collaboration, the choirs were interpreted by Mario Incudine. The arrangements are by Dario Lisitano, who also deserves credit, explains Alessandro, for having directed him on the right musical path. The musicians: Fabrizio Marcellino on guitar and Novo himself, Santino Merrino on percussion.

The video clip of the song was directed by Alessando Capurro and Carlotta Ingemi. The shots were all shot in characteristic places of the city, from the north coast to the village of Pezzolo, and were made by Carlotta Ingemi, Giuseppe Spuria and on the drone by Marco Gismondo.

The appointment not to be missed to listen to Novo live is for August 5th, the singer-songwriter will open the concert by Eugenio Bennato and Mario Incudine. His notes will resonate in the arena of Villa Dante, a place frequented as a child with skinned knees, and which he now finds again as a protagonist.

Akinola Sennon started attending the Joseph School of the Arts in 1991, from age seven, learning to play the cuatro and studying the theory of music. He then moved on to playing two other instruments, the guitar and the piano at the said music school in Siparia, under the tutelage of Mr. Ashford Joseph. By age ten, Akinola was arranging musical compositions for his sibling to perform at his school concerts and recitals, since they all attended the same school.
Akinola Sennon started playing the steelpan in Standard Three with Mr Roland ‘Moose’ Joseph and at that point, he fell deeply in love with the instrument. During this time, he also played the guitar with the school and church choir. Miss Valdez, the school choir Mistress, was quite a huge influence in developing his musical ability. Mr Joseph nurtured his talent during that early period by taking him to many competitions and exposing us to the steelpan fraternity. Akinola Sennon remembers Mr Roland ‘Moose’ Joseph taking him to Pantrinbago’s Annual General Meetings and introducing him to various persons.
Akinola Sennon joined Siparia Deltones in 1996 for the Panorama season and also the Stage Side. It was there that he met Mr Carlton ‘Zanda’ Alexander. Akinola vividly remembers him asking him one day, “Young man, do you know your scales?” to which Akinola Sennon said “Yes.” He then instructed him, “Play me this scale,” which Akinola did. He then replied, “Ok, well do you know your chord scales?” Akinola again answered, “Yes.”He instructed, “Well play me this chord scale.” Akinola played the scale and he then requested him to play him the same chord scale from the 2nd inversion and that was where the trouble started. That was the beginning of a 17 year old relationship. Akinola has been his understudy since then.
Akinola Sennon was inducted as a member of the Coal Pot band which was led by Mr. Zanda. This band was basically a Kaiso/Jazz fusion ensemble with horns, vocals, piano, bass guitar and steelpan. He performed extensively at all the leading jazz and fusion shows throughout the nation, including Tobago Jazz Festival, San Fernando Jazz Festival, Sanch Apri Carnival, Siparia Jazz Festival, Point Jazz Festivaland many more. At age 18, he also began playing with Clive Alexander, Carlton’s older brother. This was also quite an experience and has significantly contributed to his overall development, especially his weekly performances at the Satchmo’s Jazz club on Ariapita Avenue for a number of months.
In 2003, Akinola Sennon became the captain of Siparia Deltones’ junior band and later went on to become the captain of the senior band. He has worked with the National Steel Symphony Orchestra for one year and the Pan in the Classroom Unit. Akinola Sennon has taught at Forest Reserve Anglican School, Fyzabad Presbyterian School, Iere High school, Palo Seco Government School and Trinidad Renaissance Preparatory School.
In 2009, Akinola played the role of the musical director for steel pan promotion in Canada, where, Siparia Deltones and I, did workshops throughout the country.
As an Arranger, he has composed for the Southern Marines Steel band Foundation placing 3rdin the Small Band Category of the Panorama competition of 2010. He won the Primary School category of the Sanfest Competition for four years in a row from 2010; three times with Forest Reserve Anglican School and one year with Trinidad Renaissance Preparatory School of which he is their musical director. Akinola Sennon also won the Pan for Blue Competition with Forest Reserve Anglican School in 2013.
He is presently the executive director and musical director of Siparia Deltones, where his intention is to have this instrument evolved globally. The designer of the band’s syllabus and course structure is what he is. Together with his band, Siparia Deltones, in 2013, they recorded an album with Hugh Masekela for which Akinola Sennon played the role of Project Coordinator and steelpan soloist.
Earlier this year, he travelled to the Netherlands to participate in the Amsterdams Conservatorium Van Summer Jazz Workshop where he is the first pan player to be accepted to be part of the prestige workshop. After that experience in the Netherlands, Akinola Sennon made a decision that the world should hear his voice more loudly via his pan. For whilst there he usually was approached and asked about his upcoming tours and albums due to students being overwhelmed by his playing ability. Akinola made the decision to do his first album, a project of the Deltones Institute of Steel Drums and music in collaboration with Berklee College, New England conservatory and Manhattan School of music students. Then he journeyed to the States where he auditioned students for the project.
This project was called Cousoumeh which received a record label contract from leading label Ropeadope Records. He also developed the concept of the album into a festival called the Cousoumeh festival. Both the album and the festival have been very successful thus far.
Akinola Sennon continues to work in the area of steelpan development, arranging and music education.

PALLUNI RUCCATI

ncagghiati sutta e machini e ginocchia scucciati
e graniti squagghiati,

i buci di pisciari comu serenati;
e i vecchiareddi n’ta strada
a scucciuliari i favi
pigghitinni na picca si hai fami.

chi non aviumu nenti,
ma riudiumu sempri,
piccireddi e ranni e vecchi senza denti……x2

o l’endass biliardini, gelati e mbriacuni.
ietta l’asu i mazzi sinnò su jastimi
e i luntanu fumu
e ciauru i tajunu, stigghioli e virina
ca birra messina,
e a duminica festa ranni,
pigghia u costumi e ietta i panni
n’ferra tuagghi guanteri e occhiali
chi scinnemu e scinnemu a mari,
tuffi e cuttigghiu e ritticchiu a tinchitè
ventu i punenti cancia a correnti
pi cu ridi e non avi nenti.

chi non aviumu nenti,
ma riudiumu sempri,
piccireddi e ranni e vecchi senza denti.

ma poi vinni u progressu e finiu stu giocu
ca modernità vulia chiù decoru
cacciaru i genti di stradi,
stutaru i fochi a mari
e fineru i palluni, i palluni ruccati,
e ora chi avemu i casi belli
e chini di minchiati, ma
si voi parrari cu quaccudunu
non sai chiù aunn’annari.

chi non aviumu nenti,
ma riudiumu sempri,
piccireddi e ranni e vecchi senza denti……x2

ammuccia, ammucciatedda,
a mucciti bonu, chi prima chi scura
forsi
ti trovu.

TRADUZIONE (IT)

Palloni arroccati (1)

nelle lamiere delle baracche i palloni arroccati
incastrati sotto le macchine e le ginocchia sbucciate
le granite squagliate
pesce e frutta urlati (2)
le grida dei pescatori come serenate
e i vecchietti in strada
a sbucciare fave
“prendine un po’ se hai fame”

Che non avevamo niente
ma ridevamo sempre
piccoli e grandi e vecchi senza denti

all’Endas calcio balilla, gelati e ubriaconi (3)
“Butta l’asso di mazze altrimenti sono bestemmie!”
e odore di tajone, stigghiole e virina (4)
con la birra Messina (5)
e la domenica festa grande
prendi il costume da bagno e getta i vestiti
prendi teli da mare, teglie e occhiali (6)
tuffi e pettegolezzi e risate incontrollate

piccoli e grandi e vecchi senza denti

piccoli e grandi e vecchi senza denti

“Nasconditi, nascondino,
nasconditi bene, che prima che fa sera
forse
ti trovo”

TRANSLATION (EN)

Perched balloons (1)

in the sheets of the shacks the perched balloons
stuck under cars and skinned knees
the melted slushes
screamed fish and fruit (2)
the cries of the fishermen like serenades
and the old men in the street
to peel broad beans
“take some if you’re hungry”

That we had nothing
but we always laughed
small and large and old without teeth

at the Endas table football, ice cream and drunkards (3)
“Throw away the ace of clubs otherwise they are blasphemies!”
and smell of tajone, stigghiole and virina (4)
with Messina beer (5)
and on Sunday a big party
grab your swimsuit and throw away your clothes
take beach towels, pans and glasses (6)
diving and gossip and uncontrolled laughter
but a fisherman says “look what there is
west wind changes the current
for those who laugh and have nothing “

That we had nothing
but we always laughed
small and large and old without teeth

But then progress came and this game ended
with modernity I wanted more decor
they kicked people off the streets
they put out the fires in the sea
and the balloons are gone, the balloons perched
and now that we have the beautiful houses
and full of bullshit, but
if you want to talk to someone
you don’t know where to go

That we had nothing
but we always laughed
small and large and old without teeth

“Hide, hide and seek,
hide well, that before it gets dark
perhaps
I find you”

(1) in reality when a balloon “crouched” it ended up in places not very accessible for a child:
On roofs, on abandoned balconies, on private land, in tree branches, under cars and so on.

(2) the “banniate” are the shouts that a vendor with a stall makes to people who buy at the local market. For example “Signoraaaaa these fish have a vivid eye”. Here it is. This is banning

(3) actually all the recreational clubs that had video games, billiards, or a simple table for playing cards are called Endas.

(4) the centenary street food of Messina: cow intestine, sheep guts, cow udder all grilled

(5) No. It is not the Messina beer you know now nationally. It is the first Messina beer. The one with decades of tradition acquired and upset by Heineken … forget it, go!

(6) “teglie” means the baking tray of baked pasta. Typical lunch for those who choose to stay all day at sea
